CA Exemption — keep, permanent or surrender?

by CA Karan Gupta

Holding a CA Inter or Final paper exemption? Type your marks and see which choice — keep, permanent or surrender — gives you the lowest pass bar, side by side.

Last statutory update: 4 Nov 2026 — v1.1 — first publication 2026-11-04.

Statutory context

ICAI's new-scheme exemption rules as published in its guidelines and announcements: 40 in each paper and 50% in the group aggregate; an exemption at 60+ runs for the next three examinations; permanent exemption after it exhausts, one window, capped at 50, 50 in each remaining paper, no fresh exemption afterwards; online surrender of any exemption at SSP → Exam Functions (ICAI announcement of 30 Jul 2026). No surrender cut-off or permanent-exemption window is announced for Inter January 2027 or Final May 2027 as at 9 Oct 2026 — the page says so and never guesses one.
